This workshop will begin at 9:00 a.m. ET on day one and end at 4:45 p.m. ET on day two. An agenda will be posted soon. 

This hands-on workshop is designed for business educators looking to integrate data analytics into their courses. Participants will gain practical experience with data wrangling, analysis, and visualization using Excel, Power BI, and Tableau. The workshop follows the QDAC (Questions → Data → Analysis → Communication) framework, providing a structured approach to incorporating and teaching analytics effectively in courses across business disciplines. Participants will develop instructional strategies, explore real-world business cases, and create engaging classroom exercises to enhance student learning and measure student success in acquiring data analytics skills. Participants will gain practical skills in the following competencies: Technical, Analytic and Critical Thinking, Instruction & Pedagogy, and Applied Business Skills and Communications.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of Day 1, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the QDAC framework for data analytics

  1. Identify key business questions that analytics can answer

  1. Perform data extraction, cleaning, and transformation (ETL) using Excel Power Query

  1. Recognize common data quality issues and solutions

  1. Develop a structured approach to teaching analytics in their own courses

By the end of Day 2, participants will be able to: 

  1. Perform data analysis and visualization using Excel, Tableau, and Power BI

  1. Choose the right analytics techniques (descriptive, predictive, prescriptive)

  1. Choose the right visualization for a given set of data

  1. Develop dashboards, reports, and visual stories for business decision-making

  1. Apply analytics and construct visualizations in a field of interest (accounting/finance/marketing/HR)

  1. Communicate analytical insights effectively through narratives and visualizations

Uday_MurthyUday S. Murthy, University of South Florida (Module 2)

Dr. Uday Murthy is Professor and Quinn Eminent Scholar of Accounting Information Systems in the Lynn Pippenger School of Accountancy at the University of South Florida. He served as director of the school from 2011 to 2019.  Professor Murthy earned his PhD from Indiana University, Bloomington. He has published over 50 scholarly journal articles in journals such as The Accounting Review, Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory, Journal of Information Systems, Behavioral Research in Accounting, International Journal of Accounting Information Systems, Journal of Management Information Systems, Decision Support Systems, and Information & Management. Professor Murthy has served as coeditor of the Journal of Information Systems, the leading academic journal for accounting information systems research, and currently serves as an associate editor of International Journal of Accounting Information Systems, and on the editorial boards of Journal of Information Systems and Journal of Emerging Technologies in Accounting.  In the Brigham Young University Accounting Research rankings, Professor Murthy is ranked #4 in the accounting information systems research field overall and #1 for AIS research using the experimental methodology.
