The New Deans Seminar is a "must-attend" event that provides insightful advice on how to handle the first few years as well as interactive discussions regarding expectations, career path, strategic planning, and AACSB Accreditation.

This is your chance to talk about the things you can't discuss on campus. Get a head start in your new role by building trusted relationships and expanding your network with others. You will have the opportunity to talk one-on-one with experienced deans who have been through the process as well as make life-long colleagues. 

This two-day event will prepare you for success, no matter what your goal as dean may be.

Wanda_CostenWanda Costen, Queen's University

Dr. Wanda Costen, Dean, Smith School of Business at Queen’s University Dr. Wanda Costen, Dean of Smith School of Business, joined the Queen’s University community in July 2021. Dr. Costen is known for being a champion of inclusiveness in business, and her collaborative approach to leadership brings a unique combination of experience in academic leadership, research and teaching, as well as senior management roles in the private and public sector. Dr. Costen engages and collaborates with community and business leaders, and university faculty, staff, students, and alumni as part of her ongoing commitment to ensuring Smith School of Business research and teaching prepares its graduates to meet society’s changing expectations of business. Dr. Costen earned a Ph.D. in sociology at Washington State University, an EMBA from Pepperdine University, and Bachelor of Science from the United States Military Academy, and has undertaken research in areas such as managing diversity, racial and gender inequality in organizations, women and leadership, and strategic human resources. Dr. Costen’s passionate belief that businesses can drive positive social impact has made her a catalyst for partnerships between academia, business and public organizations on diversity initiatives and training programs throughout her career. Dr. Costen is on the boards of the Kingston Economic Development Corporation, as well as the Business Schools Association of Canada (BSAC).

Rowena Ortiz-Walters, St. Mary's University

Rowena Ortiz-Walters, Ph.D., serves as Dean of the Greehey School of Business and Professor of Management. Prior to joining the GSB, Ortiz-Walters served as Dean of the School of Business and Economics at SUNY Plattsburgh in New York for six years. As dean, she was responsible for building and sustaining a culture that supports faculty and student success; strategic planning and creation of a shared vision for the school; maintenance of AACSB accreditation and high educational standards; innovative thinking and programming that meets market demands and student needs; and fostering partnerships with the external business community. Ortiz-Walters received a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut, an MBA from Technology Management University of New Haven and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Connecticut. Her works appear in such scholarly publications as “The Journal of Organizational Behavior,” “Journal of Vocational Behavior,” and the “Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship.”

Who Should Attend

New, interim, and acting deans of three years or less.

This event is exclusively for new deans and heads of higher education business units (the highest academic authority or official of the business unit). Registration substitutions replacing one individual with another individual for the same event) will not be granted for this event.
